How Good are Toyota Vehicles for Towing?

Toyota is a Japanese automotive company which is considered one the largest car manufacturers in the world. The company produces over 10 million vehicles per year and has a wide range of models.

The Toyoda Model G Automatic Loom was invented by Sakichi Toyoda in 1924. This may not seem to be pertinent to the story of an auto manufacturer but it was the sale of the patent for this loom to British company Platt Brothers that funded Toyota’s birth.

Kiichiro Toyoda, Sakichi’s son, established the automobile division of the Toyoda Automatic Loom Works company in 1933. In January of 1934 they formally announced their intention to make automobiles. The first Toyota engine prototype was ready in September with the first car ready in May of 1935. It was a sedan called the Toyota A1.

Despite this prototype however Kiichiro actually focused on making trucks rather than cars. It wasn’t until 1936 that the first passenger car was created, the Model AA. Initially the cars were Toyoda’s but when it came to the logo being written in Japanese it only took eight strokes to write Toyota. Eight is a lucky number in Japan so subsequently the company name changed to Toyota rather than the official family name Toyoda.

Toyota was greatly impacted by the second world war and the post conflict period was a time of rebuilding and down sizing. The Korean war turned out to be a boon for the company however as their proximity to Korea led to the United States ordering 1000 trucks for the war effort.

In 1952 the company developed its first full-fledged passenger car, the Toyopet Crown. Previously they had been outsourcing elements of their vehicle designs.

Today Toyota has a wide range of models so we come to the big question at hand, can Toyota cars tow? In the early 1990s models could conservatively manage 1,500 to 2,000 lbs. of towing power. There were however models such as the Toyota Pickup and Land Cruiser Wagon that could tow up to 5,000 lbs.

In 1996 the Toyota T100 4x2 picked up the pace slightly and could manage 5,200 lbs of towing. A few years later the 1999 Land Cruiser Wagon upped the game further with 6,500 lbs. of towing capacity. In 2005 Toyota 4Runner 2WD set the bar again at 7,300 lbs.

The real towing powerhouses would come along a few years later in the form of the Toyota Tundras which could pull in excess of 10,000 lbs. Ultimately most Toyota models are capable of towing to some degree, you may just need a towing package and may want to check for what your vehicle is rated.
