How Good are Porsche Vehicles for Towing?

Porsche is a luxury car manufacturer which specializes in high-performance sports cars, sedans and SUVs. Owned by fellow German based company Volkswagen, Porsche has a long and storied history in the automotive world.

In 1931 Ferdinand Porsche, Adolf Rosenberger and Anton Piech founded Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH. The initial business model was a consultancy firm for motor vehicle development. They did not initially build any of their own vehicles.

It was this company that the German government came to when they wanted to design a car “for the people,” or in German, Volkswagen. The resultant car was the very first model of the VW Beetle. When they did enter into making their own cars in 1939 the Porsche 64 was developed using many components from the Beetle.

Following the second world war Ferdinand Porsche was arrested for alleged war crimes leaving his son Ferry to try and salvage the family's fortunes. Unable to find a car he would like to buy, Ferry decided to design one himself. The first models of what would become the Porsche 356 were built in a sawmill and after showing the prototypes to auto dealers pre-orders poured in.

Ferry and the daughter of his father's partner Anton Piech, Louise, founded Porsche Konstruktionen GesmbH. This company would eventually be absorbed back into their fathers' original company with Ferdinand having been released from jail.

After the war parts were in short supply so Beetle parts were again used but gradually as time passed they were able to evolve and start making new parts to refine the designs. Porsche have gone on to produce many sports car models, compete in motor racing to a high level of success and also branch out to other vehicle types.

So the question is can a Porsche sports car tow anything of substance? Well the answer is likely no, one of their more sporty models would not be good for towing but Porsche does have you covered.

The Porsche Cayenne is a crossover vehicle which since 2006 has been more than capable of towing up to 7,716 lbs. This is certainly nothing to be sniffed at as it gives you a lot of options. A few years later the Porsche Macan was released as a second crossover. This was not quite as powerful but would still manage up to 4,409 lbs.

Generally speaking most Porsches are designed for towing with the exception of their crossovers. Always check with your dealer what your Porsche is rated for and whether or not you might need a towing package fitted.
