How Good are Tesla Vehicles for Towing?
Tesla is a clean energy company that is based in Austin, Texas. They not only produce solar panels and batteries but they also offer a line of luxury automobiles. Its high-end prices make Tesla the world's most valuable automaker.
On July 1st 2003 Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning incorporated Tesla Motors Inc with the aim of creating an automaker that is also a technology company. The company's third employee was Ian Wright who joined just a few months after Tesla was created.
In February of 2004 the founders went in search of investment raising 7.5 million which included 6.5 million from Elon Musk. In short order Musk would become chairman of the board of directors as well as the main shareholder in the company. In 2009 a lawsuit settlement allowed Musk to be named as a founder of the company
The plan for the company was to start with a premium electric sports car to build a basis for them to branch out into some more mainstream models. This first car, the Roadster was unveiled in July of 2006 in Santa Monica, California.
In 2007 Elon Musk asked Eberhard to step down as CEO and within a year he actually left the company altogether. Tarpenning also left the company in 2008 with Eberhard filing suit against Musk for forcing him out.
Between 2008 and 2012 the company sold the Roadster but then discontinued this model in favor of the Model S luxury sedan. A series of other models have since been released all of them electric and all priced at a premium thanks to the level of technology packed into them.
So now we come to the question at hand: can you use a Tesla to perform towing tasks? If you were to check the Tesla website you would find it hard to locate tow ratings for any of their models but you can purchase towing packages.
The Model Y for instance has a towing package that costs $1300 and according to the details can help you tow up to 3,500 lbs. You can also get a tow package for the Model X which costs around $750 and also allows for 3,500 lbs. of towing.
It may surprise you to discover that even the sporty Model 3 can have a tow package fitted and pull up to 2,200 lbs. of weight. The thing to understand however is that these electric vehicles are not designed to tow so although they can it does not mean they will be great at it.
