How Good are Hyundai Vehicles for Towing?

Hyundai operates the world's largest integrated automobile manufacturing facility which is located in Ulsan, South Korea. At this massive plant some 1.6 million units are built per year including a wide range of vehicle styles.

In 1947 the Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company was formed by Korean businessman Chung Ju-Yung. This company was initially a construction company but ultimately branched out into many other business concerns.

It was in 1967 that the parent company formed the Hyundai Motor Company who in partnership with the Ford Motor Company developed the Cortina. This model would wear the Ford badge in Europe but Hyundai played their part.

The next obvious step was to design their own first car which would carry the Hyundai name. In order to do this they hired a legend of British automotive companies, George Turnbull, in 1974. Turnbull pulled together a team of five British car engineers. These engineers were body designer Kenneth Barnett, engineers John Simpson and Edward Chapman, John Crosthwaite, chassis engineer and Peter Slater as chief development engineer.

It was in 1975 that the hard work of the British engineers paid off and the Pony would become the first South Korean car to be released. Issues with emissions would keep the Pony out of the US but Canada took to the little Korean car and it quickly became very popular during the 1980s.

Finally in 1986 Hyundai cars were able to meet the emissions standards of the US and began sending cars to that market. Over the next few decades they would refine their designs and build up an impressive and diverse range of vehicles.

So now we come to the question at hand: can Hyundai field some vehicles with which you can tow? The answer is yes the diverse Hyundai range offers plenty of towing options. Since the early '90s most of the company's models were capable of between 1,000 – 2,000 lbs. of towing weight.

In more recent years the company has produced SUVs such as the Tucson, Palisade and Santa Fe XL models. These are not brutishly strong however but the Palisade and the Santa Fe XL are both capable of 5,000 lbs. of towing force.

As with all vehicles check and see if you already have a trailer hitch fitted and ensure it is in good shape. If there is no hitch then you may need to affix a towing kit. Also double check with your dealer what your model may be rated to tow and how easy it would be to make it ready to do so.
