How Good are Cadillac Vehicles for Towing?

The name Cadillac has become an icon in American automotive manufacturing, praised for its luxury and performance. As part of General Motors, Cadillac is their premium luxury brand just above the Buick and is sold in 34 markets around the globe.

Before the Ford Motor Company there was the Henry Ford Company and it is from the dissolution of Ford's first company that the Cadillac arose from the ashes. Following a dispute with investors Henry Ford left the company that bore his name taking with him several major partners.

The investors that Ford left behind were William Murphy and Lemuel Bowen. In an effort to recoup their investment they called in engineer Henry M Leland to assess the remaining plant and equipment to see what they would be worth if sold.

Ultimately Leland convinced Murphy and Bowen to continue manufacturing and from this they formed the Cadillac Automobile Company in 1902. The name Cadillac came from the founder of Detroit, a French explorer called Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac.

The first Cadillac models were completed in October of 1902 and were both two-seater models known respectively as the Runabout and Tonneau. Both of these vehicles were virtually identical to the Ford Model A.

Almost from the very start Cadillac’s precision manufacturing standards created a product that was reliable and at the time considered superior to their competitors. Within a few years the Cadillac Automobile Company would merge with Leleand and Faulconer Manufacturing to form the Cadillac Motor Company.

Over the years they have cultivated a reputation for precision engineering and stylish luxury finishes. The company became part of General Motors in 1909 and its focus became the creation of large luxury vehicles.

So the question is then: do these large luxury Cadillacs have any business trying to tow anything behind them? It may come as a surprise but some Cadillacs have got some serious pulling power. Going back to the 1991 Brougham model which is rated for 5,000 lbs. Just a year later in the '92 Brougham this had been upped to 7,000 lbs.

There are some even more impressive tow ratings when it comes to Cadillac with several model years and trims of the Escalade that can tow up to 8,300 lbs. Of course some of the Cadillacs from over the years can’t do better than 1,000 lbs. and will usually require a towing package to be fitted.

Always check with your dealership to find out if your specific model has a tow rating and how much that is. Generally speaking though these well built machines can do some level of towing if really needed.
